    Book Summary from Good Reads:
The story of Native peoples' resistance to environmental injustice and land incursions, and a call for environmentalists to learn from the Indigenous community's rich history of activism

Through the unique lens of "Indigenized environmental justice," Indigenous researcher and activist Dina Gilio-Whitaker explores the fraught history of treaty violations, struggles for food and water security, and protection of sacred sites, while highlighting the important leadership of Indigenous women in this centuries-long struggle. As Long As Grass Grows gives readers an accessible history of Indigenous resistance to government and corporate incursions on their lands and offers new approaches to environmental justice activism and policy.

Throughout 2016, the Standing Rock protest put a national spotlight on Indigenous activists, but it also underscored how little Americans know about the longtime historical tensions between Native peoples and the mainstream environmental movement. Ultimately, she argues, modern environmentalists must look to the history of Indigenous resistance for wisdom and inspiration in our common fight for a just and sustainable future.

  • NENA DEI Committee Meeting

    Time: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

    Details:

Join the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA) for our monthly meeting of the new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee! We are gathering community members who are interested in working together on some of the most pressing issues for our community and city.

Grounding Statement: NENA believes every person has the right to a safe, healthy home and a welcoming community that values Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

This new committee is a safe space for community members who share these same values. Together we will identify barriers such as systematic racism, xenophobia, religious intolerance, classism, sexism, heteronormative culturalism, transphobia, ableism, ageism, and other forms of oppression affecting our community members. Our first efforts will be directed towards anti-racism projects in response to the neighborhood's desire for more ways to engage after the murder of George Floyd and the civil uprising.

Join us and let us know what you are working on, what issues need to be addressed, and how we can start this important work together. NENA is holding the space. You are invited to come and co-create this group with your neighbors. New-to-DEI-work folks and established champions will find a welcoming space here.
