  • Friends of Lake Nokomis Buckthorn Bust

    Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Where: Shoreline on the NE end of the Cedar Avenue Bridge

    Details:

Friends of Lake Nokomis Oct 28th and Nov 5th: 9-11am - Join us to pull Buckthorn, an invasive woody shrub, from Lake Nokomis Regional Park. We'll have weed wrenches, warm beverages and some fellow enthusiastic volunteers to ward off the chill. This shrub was originally brought to the US from Europe as a hedge, and its ability to crowd out natives by leafing out earlier than most as well as keeping its leaves well into the fall has made it an aggressive invasive plant in our landscape.

Location for the 28th's pull is the shoreline on the NE end of the Cedar Avenue Bridge. And the location for the 5th pull is SE end of the Cedar Avenue Bridge. Wear layers and work gloves. This is a labor intensive volunteer opportunity, most appropriate for people aged 8 or better (teens and adults will use wrenches, with younger people helping move the pulled plants). Volunteers will use weed wrenches for pulling the plants from the ground and will move pulled plants to a pile near the trail for pick up by park maintenance/forestry staff.

Can't make it? Check your yard for this plant and remove it! The seeds travel far and wide in the guts of our local bird population: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialplants/woody/buckthorn/index.html
